High end kitchens: what separates them from merely expensive ones

Pick the slab, not the sample

Stone is the first decision on most high end kitchens, because everything after has to agree with it. A 50mm sample chip tells you the colour and little else. Veining runs at three metres, so a piece you fall for on an offcut can read as a smear once it climbs a full height kitchen splashback.

Go to the yard and tag the actual slabs, photographed end to end. Bookmatching means two consecutive slabs are opened like a book so the veining mirrors across the join. It works only if you buy both at once and tell the stonemason before the first cut. A vein running down a waterfall end is the same job: a cutting plan, not a finish selection.

Material choice narrowed in July 2024, when engineered stone with crystalline silica was banned across Australia. Stone kitchen benchtops now come from marble, granite, quartzite or porcelain. Marble etches around lemon and wine. A porcelain kitchen benchtop wears well but shows a thin edge unless the mitres are cut properly.

Island proportions do most of the work

A kitchen island bench gets judged on its stone, but the dimensions decide whether anyone enjoys using it. Too deep and nobody can reach the middle. Too long without a break and it becomes a runway with a sink in it. Most kitchen island designs fail on clearance, not looks.

Good kitchen layouts start from the gaps, not the cabinets. The numbers we hold to:

• 1050 to 1100mm between island and back bench, so two people and an open dishwasher door fit
• 1200mm maximum island depth, past which you cannot wipe the centre without leaning on stone
• 300mm knee overhang where there is seating, and about 600mm of bench per stool
• 900mm kitchen bench height as standard, raised if the person who actually cooks is tall
• Sink and dishwasher on the island, cooking on the back wall, so guests stay out of the hot zone

Integrated appliances are a planning job

Integration is where a high end kitchen holds together or falls apart, and it fails when the appliances get picked late. Every integrated unit changes the kitchen joinery around it. A fridge cavity needs the ventilation gap the manufacturer specifies, to the millimetre. A panelled dishwasher door needs the right hinge or it sags within a year.

Ask which luxury appliances to buy and you get a brand list back: Gaggenau, Sub-Zero, Wolf, Miele, V-Zug. Any of them will cook well. What shows is the fit, because a cavity drawn for one model and filled with another leaves a gap you see every day.

So lock the appliance schedule before the cabinetmaker draws anything, with model numbers not categories. Then the rangehood sits centred over the hob, and nobody finds out on install day that the plumbed fridge has no valve behind it.

A butler's pantry is a working room, not a cupboard

Butler's pantries get sold as a luxury and then built as a corridor of empty shelving. Most walk in pantry designs come undone on one thing: where the door sits. If you can see into it from the dining table, it stays shut all night.

Put the opening off the main sightline. Give it a full depth bench so the coffee machine and the mixer have power above them. A second sink earns its place only if dirty dishes can sit out of view. Run the pantry through to the laundry and the groceries stop crossing the main kitchen.

Resolution is what you are paying for

Expensive is a shopping list. Resolution is what you notice walking in. In a resolved kitchen the tap is centred on the window and the cabinetry joins land on the window mullions. The shadow gaps hold one width the whole way round.

Colour gets asked about more than any of it. Warm off whites, greige, muted olive and dark timber all read as expensive, because they leave the stone and the joinery in charge. That restrained palette has held as the Australian look going into 2026. Three competing colours date a room before the trades are off site.

Lighting gives it away too. One bright ceiling fitting flattens the room and throws your shadow on the bench. Task light under the overheads, warm light over the island and a dimmer on both do more at night than another slab upgrade.

What does a high end kitchen cost in Australia?

Prices for high end kitchens are not published, and a number quoted without a drawing is a guess. The useful question is where the money goes: the number of stone slabs, the appliance schedule, and how much of the joinery is made rather than bought.

Slabs are sold whole, so a bookmatched island and a full height splashback can double the stone line on their own. Custom kitchens are priced in cabinetmaker hours, and curves and full height doors add plenty of them. The Housing Industry Association puts kitchens and bathrooms at more than 11 billion dollars of Australian building work, almost none of it sold off a rate card.

Get the layout signed off before you price it. A plan you have not resolved returns a kitchen renovation cost for a kitchen you are never going to build.
